My oldest is 14 this year.  That she will be able to drive (with a learner’s permit) next year terrifies me.

Good luck to your son!

I’d suggest taking her to a parking lot every chance you get. My dad and I realized too late that we’d screwed up by not getting me driving experience before driver’s ed.

Definitely.  There is a large lot right next to my parent’s house that is empty on the weekends.

T eenage boy with a Shelby shirt?  He’s not hitting 20 without at least one car crash.

I need to hurry up and get a field car for my kid to drive. Maybe next summer

Good luck to him! When I was a kid we had an 18-year-old German au-pair who took something like 10 tries to pass the Maryland driver’s test (despite being being licensed in Germany). Some of that might have been language difficulties on the written test (I shudder to think of how I’d have done on a Spanish language test, even after six years of Spanish in school), but she also failed the “ road” (actually a little prepared course)  test several times.

I thought the US and Germany had a reciprocity when it came to licenses, which is why I was able to drive with my US license, state of GA to be exact, in Germany .

I think only for temporary periods? Haven’t paid attention recently, and this would have been circa 1990. In any event, we had all of our au-pairs get licensed in Maryland.

Due to Covid, the Street Survival program is suspended but as soon as it’s back up and running I recommend it for all teens. They learn more in a single day than they do in a full driver’s ed program.

I’ve got 15yo twin boys (well, 15 on Saturday). No way in hell are they ready to get behind the wheel.

He got dinged on his OTR test because he failed to come to a complete stop at a right turn on red. That’s a ticket able offense, and one that probably should have failed him. But he passed.

He passed with a 95. They dinged him for making too many back and forths on his parallel parking, even though he nailed the curb distance. And then they dinged him for not looking or signaling when he pulled out of the parallel space between the cones in the back corner of the parking lot behind the school. I get it, but it’s not like he was pulling out into a street, and who signals for that anyway? Doesn't really matter, he passed, and now we can get his actual license.

I think that was a temporary thing. Many countries allow for around six or 12 months use of your licence in a host nation, after that you have to apply for a licence in that nation. Here in the U.K. if you are Canadian or American you have to sit the test but if you are from an E.U. nation or on a list (I thing Australia and New Zealand are on it) , you need only fill out a form, send in your driving licence and get your original licence back and a British licence also (I had to do it for a couple of Polish guys who wanted me to go through it with them and proof read before they sent it, because if anything is incorrect, you have to file again, and pay the fee again, which I think was about £80).

I remember that well. I had a crotchety old dude who didn’t wear a seat belt and continually yelled at me about how badly I was doing. Seeing as I was quite a confident driver at that point, I knew he was wrong and just carried on. I passed but got dinged for failing the para llel parking after the backup camera confused me (I still haven’t actually used one and am probably a better driver for that).

Nicely done!

It’s their job to ding you on the little stuff but those feel too nit-picky.

I looked into this, because in Texas you had to take a drivers ed class if you were under 25 before getting your license. The caveat to that is if you had a full driving license somewhere where Texas had reciprocity with you could get a full Texas license. I was 23 at the time and had never taken a drivers ed class as it wasn’t a requirement in Georgia when I was getting my license. They had several cou ntries listed as well, with Germany being one of them.

My girlfriends sister moved to Belgium and married a Dutch guy and I believe she has a Belgian drivers license, I’ll have to ask her if she had to sit a test of not; I’m more curi ous than anything.

Ha, I’ m pretty sure thats the one thing I did wrong on my drivers test too.

Unrelated, I crashed a car before turning 20.

What state are you in? When I took my test I didn’t have to parallel park at all, just back in. Still, congrats! Now he too can enjoy the thrills and joys of driving.

Texas. I was kind of surprised that they have to do it, since parallel parking is barely a thing here. I grew up driving in VA, in a neighborhood of 100-year-old townhouses and no driveways. You had to know how to PP. I moved to TX in 1989, and I think I’ve PP’d about 5 times since then. Ultimately, though, I think it’s more about showing some manner of proficiency in driving backwards.

Though my son will have his license in two weeks, we are still going to be doing practice sessions. I’ve been bugging him about backing up without using the backup camera. I told him the camera is only to check immediately behind the car and then to see how close you are to something. Otherwise, eyes out, use the mirrors.

I lived near Annapolis MD, so I know exactly what you’re talking about and yes, parallel parking is crucial.

I now have a great habit of checking my rearview and sideview as I back out because 1.) my car has a feature where the passenger side view mirror tilts down when you shift into reverse and 2.) I have a rearview camera built into the rearview window (only aftermarket thing on the car, and I love it to bits). Now anytime I get into a car with a backup cam I’m instantly looking up and to the right. I’ve been backing in ever since.

GL! We went to Austin Driving School and paid them to test out the driving after the home taught. Best money spent.

She has been driving for a year and a half accident free!

My son did the classroom work there, and some of the first hours behind the wheel. Then I did the 30-hour log with him. We finished a long time ago, but just haven’t felt the need to push for the license. Waiting until after he turned 18 helps with the insurance, and he’s also more mature in general. He did well.

All the events for 2020 got cancelled, your state might have some during normal times (most states have at least one group running the program). I’d recommend checking back in 2021, it’s never too late to sign someone up.
